{"id":1967,"date":"2012-11-01T12:15:35","date_gmt":"2012-11-01T16:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timandrewsblog-asicentral.com\/timblog\/?p=1967"},"modified":"2012-11-01T12:25:56","modified_gmt":"2012-11-01T16:25:56","slug":"after-sandy-an-asi-industry-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timandrewsblog-asicentral.com\/timblog\/2012\/11\/01\/after-sandy-an-asi-industry-update\/","title":{"rendered":"After Sandy: An ASI Industry Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s now been a few days, but the East Coast and beyond remains in a state of crisis after Hurricane Sandy hit.<\/p>\n<p>Please keep in mind as you attempt to reach customers and colleagues that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/US\/\" target=\"_blank\">millions remain without power<\/a> and many towns remain flooded.\u00a0 Gasoline is becoming a scarce commodity and not being able to travel is looming as a real possibility.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/ASICentral\/55248546043\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/timandrewsblog-asicentral.com\/timblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/asilot2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So far, the hurricane is responsible for at least 133 deaths in the Caribbean, the U.S. and Canada. As news reports continue to come in, it\u2019s clear we will feel the effects of Sandy for months, even years, to come.<\/p>\n<p>Like more than two million households in New   Jersey, my home in Princeton lost power. \u00a0Here, I\u2019ve posted a couple of photos, taken standing at the end of my driveway looking left and right.\u00a0 The trees are bigger in person! \u00a0Luckily, I have a generator (purchased after Hurricane Irene dumped three feet of water into my basement last year) so I opened my doors to friends in need of a dry, safe place to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Two of my new temporary housemates live in Hoboken, N.J., a city of 50,000 people across the Hudson River from Manhattan.\u00a0 Hoboken has been devastated by flooding and the National Guard recently swept through to evacuate many residents in need. \u00a0I can\u2019t imagine what it\u2019s like in New York City at nightfall with the lights still out in so many areas. \u00a0\u00a0Friends live in a building with 11 feet of water in the basement.\u00a0 And, as of Wednesday, about 90% of Long  Island remained without power.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/01\/nyregion\/new-jersey-continues-to-cope-with-hurricane-sandy.html?hp\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/timandrewsblog-asicentral.com\/timblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/timdriveway1jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Communities are starting to get help, and everyone appears to be working together to help their neighbors. President Obama was in New Jersey, touring the inundated Jersey Shore with Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican.\u00a0\u00a0 It was refreshing to see our elected officials putting aside politics in favor of the citizenry.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t yet seen this National Guard footage, shot from the air over Seaside Heights, N.J., one of the hardest-hit shore towns, <a href=\"http:\/\/videos.nj.com\/star-ledger\/2012\/10\/national_guard_video_aerial_vi.html\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>. It really puts things in perspective. An 82-year-old resident of Sea Bright, N.J., said in an interview he\u2019s never seen anything like the destruction wrought by Hurricane Sandy \u2013 and he\u2019s witnessed the very worst of the big storms over the years.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to help those affected, one of the best things you can do right now is text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to <a href=\"https:\/\/american.redcross.org\/site\/SPageNavigator\/ntld_Redcross_text2help_faqs?JServSessionIdr004=9klgpoxy51.app293b\" target=\"_blank\">American Red Cross Disaster Relief<\/a>. They will buy and distribute the supplies needed most.<\/p>\n<p>As I wrote in an e-mail to members, ASI<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is here to help our members.<\/p>\n<p>If your business is affected in any way, we can help spread the word. The company \u2013 located outside Philadelphia \u2013 officially closed Monday and Tuesday, but we are now back in business. However, about half of our staff remains out of the office, dealing with storm-related issues.
